What is WBGT?

Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) is a measure of heat stress that accounts for temperature, humidity, wind speed, and radiant heat. Unlike simple heat index, WBGT provides a complete picture of environmental heat load.

  • Wet Bulb: Measures humidity's cooling effect (evaporative cooling potential)
  • Dry Bulb: Standard air temperature reading
  • Globe: Measures radiant heat from sun, equipment, and surfaces

WBGT Formula

Outdoor (with sun):

WBGT = 0.7(Tw) + 0.2(Tg) + 0.1(Td)

Where:

  • Tw = Wet bulb temperature
  • Tg = Black globe temperature
  • Td = Dry bulb (air) temperature
